Hasan Salihamidzic: Bayern Munich considered Haaland and Mbappé before Harry Kane

Former FC Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has shed light on the club's transfer strategies, particularly concerning their long-standing pursuit of a top-tier striker.

Salihamidzic revealed that as far back as autumn 2021, following the realization that Robert Lewandowski would likely depart, Bayern identified Harry Kane as their prime target to fill the void. However, initial attempts to secure the English captain were met with resistance, as Tottenham Hotspur, his then-club, were unwilling to enter into negotiations.

This stalemate led Bayern to pursue other options. In 2022, the club signed Sadio Mané, a move that ultimately proved disappointing for both the player and the club. Despite this, the search for a prolific center-forward continued.

Further details emerged regarding Bayern's consideration of other elite strikers. Salihamidzic confirmed that both Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé were on the club's radar. Haaland was a significant consideration, but he ultimately chose to join Manchester City in 2022, opting for a move to the Premier League.

Kylian Mbappé, another world-class talent, was also discussed, but the financial implications of such a transfer were deemed prohibitive for Bayern at the time. This made a move for the French superstar unfeasible.

Despite these alternative considerations, Bayern's focus remained steadfastly on Harry Kane. The club continued their pursuit, eventually succeeding in signing him for a reported fee of €95 million in the summer of 2023.

Notably, Salihamidzic was dismissed from his role as sporting director before the final transfer negotiations for Kane were concluded. Nevertheless, he expressed his admiration for Kane's immediate and significant impact at Bayern, highlighting his exceptional goal-scoring ability and even suggesting he could be a Ballon d'Or contender.

Since his arrival, Harry Kane has enjoyed a phenomenal start to his Bayern career, netting an impressive 146 goals in just 147 appearances. His current contract with the club extends until 2027, although speculation regarding his future and potential moves remains a recurring topic of discussion among football circles.
