La Liga striker Rafa Mir has been handed a prison sentence exceeding eight years following a conviction for sexual assault and injury. The charges stem from an incident that occurred in August 2024 at his residence in Valencia.
The court determined that Mir had sexually assaulted a woman at his villa after encountering her and a companion at a local nightclub. The victim's testimony was crucial in the proceedings, detailing the assault. The court characterized the evidence presented against Mir as "seamless," indicating a high degree of corroboration and credibility.
In addition to the significant prison term, the ruling mandates that Mir pay €64,000 in compensation to the victim. Furthermore, he is subject to a 10-year restraining order, prohibiting any contact with the victim or her family. Upon completion of his prison sentence, Mir will also undergo seven years of supervised release.
Despite the conviction and sentence, Mir has consistently maintained his innocence. He has publicly declared his disagreement with the court's decision and expressed his faith in the justice system. His legal representatives are preparing to lodge an appeal with the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the verdict.
The legal proceedings and the severity of the sentence have drawn attention within the football community. Both his current club, Sevilla, and his former loan club, Elche, have issued statements indicating they are closely monitoring the situation and reviewing the implications of the conviction.
