Bielsa brands Uruguay tenure 'worthless' after World Cup exit

Marcelo Bielsa has delivered a scathing self-assessment following Uruguay's World Cup elimination after a 1-0 loss to Spain.

The Argentine coach declared his three-year tenure 'worthless' without major tournament success, accepting full responsibility for the team's disappointing campaign.

Despite achieving fourth place in qualifying and third at the Copa America, Bielsa stated these results were meaningless given the World Cup exit.

He lamented Uruguay's failure to secure the desired seven points, managing only two from three matches despite a talented squad.

Bielsa also defended his decision to persist with veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, citing his form and experience, though Muslera himself requested to be substituted at halftime against Spain.

The coach's future now hangs in the balance amid intense scrutiny.

"We didn't achieve the objective," Bielsa stated in his post-match press conference.

"The results in this competition are the only ones that matter, and we failed."
