Columbus Crew Dismiss Head Coach Henrik Rydstrom Amidst Poor 2026 Season Start

The Columbus Crew have made a significant change in leadership, parting ways with head coach Henrik Rydstrom after a disappointing beginning to their 2026 MLS season.

The Swedish tactician's tenure was cut short after overseeing a mere three victories in the team's opening 14 fixtures. This dismal record has left the Crew struggling in 13th position within the Eastern Conference standings, having accumulated seven defeats.

General manager Issa Tall addressed the decision, highlighting a combination of factors including consistently poor results on the field. Furthermore, Tall indicated that Rydstrom's tactical approach and playing style did not fully align with the club's long-term vision and expected brand of football. A perceived cultural disconnect within the squad was also cited as a contributing element.

Rydstrom inherited a difficult situation, tasked with succeeding Wilfried Nancy, the coach who guided the Crew to considerable domestic success, including an MLS Cup triumph. The pressure to maintain that winning momentum was immense.

In response to Rydstrom's dismissal, the club has moved swiftly to appoint top assistant Laurent Courtois as the interim head coach. The managerial shake-up extends beyond the head coach role, with two other members of Rydstrom's coaching staff also departing the organization.

The immediate challenge for Courtois will be to navigate the team's current roster limitations. A series of injuries have hampered squad depth, most notably the season-ending torn ACL sustained by designated player Wessam Abou-Ali. This means Courtois will largely have to work with the players currently available.

Despite the current struggles and the managerial upheaval, the Columbus Crew still have a substantial number of matches left in the 2026 season. They are currently only four points behind the final playoff qualification spot, leaving a glimmer of hope for a turnaround in fortunes.

The club will be looking to Courtois to instill a renewed sense of purpose and tactical discipline, aiming to salvage their season and build towards future success under new leadership.
