The Football Association (FA) has announced a comprehensive review of the FA Youth Cup final regulations. This decision comes in the wake of a significant venue dispute between Manchester United and Manchester City for this season's final.
Manchester City's choice to stage the final at their Joie Stadium, a venue primarily used for women's football with a capacity of 6,447, was met with considerable backlash. The club cited ongoing construction at the Etihad Stadium as the reason for selecting the smaller ground.
In contrast, Manchester United reportedly proposed their historic Old Trafford ground as a potential alternative. The aim was to offer a grander stage befitting a cup final and to maximize the exposure for the talented young players involved.
However, Manchester City's proposal was ultimately accepted, and United's offer was rejected. This decision ignited widespread criticism from Manchester United supporters and academy personnel, with the Manchester United Supporters' Trust labeling the choice 'a disgrace'.
The Trust pointed to previous FA Youth Cup finals that have attracted crowds of over 67,000, highlighting the disparity in the potential audience and experience for the players at the Joie Stadium.
Despite the off-field controversy, Manchester City emerged victorious in the final, securing a 2-1 win over their rivals.
Following the match, Manchester United's U18 coach, Darren Fletcher, expressed his disappointment with the FA's handling of the event. He suggested that the staging felt more like a 'Man City competition' rather than a prestigious FA-organized final.
