Bayer Leverkusen has been dealt a significant blow in their pursuit of a new head coach.
The club's primary target, Brazilian manager Filipe Luis, has unexpectedly opted to join AS Monaco, leaving Leverkusen scrambling.
Luis, who has an impressive track record with Flamengo, having secured eight titles in just three years, was widely considered Leverkusen's top choice for the managerial position.
Despite efforts led by general manager Thiago Scuro, negotiations with Luis ultimately proved unsuccessful, and he is now no longer an option for the German club.
With their main candidate off the table, Bayer Leverkusen is reportedly now considering 'Options B and C' for their managerial role.
Two prominent names being linked with the vacant position are Oliver Glasner, recently crowned a European champion with Crystal Palace in the Conference League final, and Andoni Iraola. Both managers are set to become available from July 1st.
This intensified managerial search comes at a critical juncture for Bayer Leverkusen, as they are widely expected to move on from their current coach, Hjulmand, despite his contract extending until 2027.
Hjulmand took over the team midway through the season, providing much-needed stability. However, the club's inability to secure Champions League qualification, their exit from the DFB-Pokal, and a sixth-place finish in the Bundesliga were ultimately insufficient to retain his services, indicating a strong desire for a new direction under a different manager.
