Former Liverpool forward Michael Owen has urged highly-rated 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha to remain at Anfield and focus on his development with the Reds, rather than pursuing a potential move to German giants Bayern Munich.
Owen, a respected figure in English football, drew parallels to the career trajectories of England internationals Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho when discussing Ngumoha's crucial early career decision. Ngumoha, who arrived at Liverpool from Chelsea's academy in 2024, has enjoyed a remarkable breakthrough season.
He has made 29 appearances across various competitions for Liverpool's youth and senior teams, even opening his senior goal account. This rapid progress has seen him emerge as a potential successor to Mohamed Salah, who is expected to depart Anfield.
Salah's impending exit is anticipated to create a significant void on the right wing, potentially opening up more first-team opportunities for Ngumoha. However, Liverpool's ongoing interest in other established wingers could present a challenge to his guaranteed playing time.
Despite the reported interest from Bayern Munich, Owen believes Ngumoha is currently at an "unbelievable club" that offers him the ideal environment for growth. He highlighted that Ngumoha is already receiving valuable opportunities and is developing positively under Liverpool's tutelage.
Owen contrasted Ngumoha's situation with that of Jude Bellingham, who moved from Birmingham City to Borussia Dortmund at a similar age, and Jadon Sancho, who struggled for consistent first-team minutes at Manchester City before his move to Germany.
He stressed that Ngumoha is not yet a guaranteed starter at either Liverpool or Bayern, emphasizing the importance of choosing a club where he can continue to learn and gain experience. The current pathway at Liverpool seems to offer this.
Ngumoha, who signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in September 2025, is expected to be offered fresh terms soon. This is likely to include a longer contract upon him reaching the age of 18, further solidifying his commitment to the Merseyside club.
