Michail Antonio, former West Ham United striker, has directly attributed the club's Premier League relegation to the tenure of ex-Chelsea manager Graham Potter.
Antonio, who left the Hammers in June 2025, claims that Potter's inability to grasp and integrate with West Ham's existing club culture was a pivotal factor in their subsequent decline. He specifically cited Potter's decision to remove experienced senior players from the squad shortly before the 2025-26 season as a critical error.
"He got rid of all the leaders," Antonio stated, expressing bewilderment at Potter's subsequent complaints about a lack of leadership within the dressing room. "How can you say you’ve got no leaders in the changing rooms if you get rid of all the leaders?" This move, according to Antonio, destabilized the team's core.
Potter's spell at the helm was short-lived and ultimately unsuccessful. He was dismissed in September 2025 following a dismal start to the season. His replacement, Nuno Espirito Santo, inherited a team struggling for form and, despite his efforts, could not prevent the club from dropping to the Championship.
Antonio also provided insight into his own departure, detailing a difficult contract negotiation with West Ham's vice-chairman, Karren Brady. He described the terms offered following a serious car accident as "ruthless," suggesting a lack of support during a vulnerable period.
Since leaving England, Antonio has embarked on a new chapter in his career, signing for Qatari club Al-Sailiya. His move has seen him adapt to a vastly different environment, even experiencing the unsettling reality of rocket fire in his new surroundings.
The former striker's comments cast a critical light on Potter's brief and turbulent time at West Ham, suggesting a fundamental misunderstanding of the club's identity and personnel that ultimately proved detrimental to their Premier League status.
Antonio's perspective offers a stark contrast to the club's official narrative, highlighting the complex interpersonal dynamics and strategic missteps that can contribute to a team's downfall.
