Sam Kerr Reportedly Set for NWSL Return with Gotham FC After Chelsea Exit

Australian superstar Sam Kerr is reportedly poised to make a significant return to the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). Sources close to the matter suggest that Kerr has reached an agreement to join Gotham FC, a move that would mark a homecoming for the prolific striker.

This potential transfer comes after an illustrious six-year period with English club Chelsea. During her time at Chelsea, Kerr cemented her status as one of the world's premier forwards, clinching an impressive five Women's Super League titles. Her individual brilliance was further highlighted by securing two Golden Boots, and she netted a remarkable 116 goals across all competitions for the London club.

Kerr is no stranger to the NWSL, having previously graced the league with her talent. Her prior clubs include Sky Blue FC, which has since rebranded to Gotham FC, the Chicago Red Stars, and the Western New York Flash. She departed the NWSL as its all-time leading scorer, boasting an impressive tally of 77 regular-season goals, a testament to her consistent impact.

Her previous stint in the NWSL was decorated with numerous accolades. In 2017, Kerr not only claimed the league's Golden Boot for her goal-scoring prowess but also earned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, showcasing her all-around dominance during that season.

However, despite her legendary status and proven track record, Kerr will not be eligible to benefit from the NWSL's High Impact Player Rule. This is due to recent injury concerns, most notably a significant ACL tear, which has impacted her availability and classification under league regulations.

Gotham FC, the team reportedly set to sign Kerr, is currently positioned fifth in the NWSL standings. The club has recently been active in the market, acquiring additional allocation money. This financial maneuver could potentially provide the necessary resources to facilitate such a high-profile and impactful acquisition.
